Twenty-six-year trucking veteran Randy Rains has very definite preferences concerning the best ways to lease a truck. This owner operator from Georgia explains that he had to go through two unsatisfying leases with other companies before he finally discovered the arrangement that was best for him: an annual one-year lease with Anderson Trucking Service (ATS).
“I prefer an annual lease. I’ve done a lease purchase before and that didn’t work out,” he says. “I was enticed with the annual lease arrangement when I first heard about ATS, back in 2007. I had read about them in a truck-stop book, and called ATS to see about getting on.”
Today, the 2012 Volvo Rains now drives is his fourth truck leased through ATS. “It’s an advantage that I’m only confined to one year’s contract at a time. At the end of the year, I’ve got a lot of choices. I can keep my current truck, get another truck, or not get one at all,” Rains explains. “With an annual lease I get the remainder of the factory’s warranty, and ATS covers maintenance for the first 30 days. Plus, I know that I’ll get a $4,000 completion bonus every year! ATS does a good job of keeping their equipment up, so I know there will always be a good lease truck to choose from.”

Rains, who drives dry van on a Southeast regional route, says he first began driving at age 14, when his truck-driver uncle put him behind the wheel of his tractor and first gave him a lesson. After running with his uncle for a time and eventually getting his CDL, Rains worked as a company driver for a few years before moving up to getting his own truck.
Today, he says he most enjoys the freedom of being an owner operator. “It’s like getting paid to sightsee; I’m not clocking in and out like in an office job. At ATS, I’m consistently making a check and I’m able to pay my bills and send money home at the end of the month,” says Rains. “I’ll stay with ATS. They’ve got a good customer base, good load planners and they take the guesswork out of what you’re doing. I’ve got no reason to go anywhere else!”
